Jack Was Not a Pit Bull

Thanks, B and Sarah Sue, for clearing that up. Now I’m feeling icky for even putting this out into the Google world. So in the spirit of equal play:

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s dog, Jack, was not a pit bull.

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s dog, Jack, was not a pit bull.

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s dog, Jack, was not a pit bull.

Furthermore, the eternally thorough Nancy Cleaveland had already addressed this very thing back in February of this year.

Don’t feel icky! A well-trained, well-raised pit bull can be a delightful dog–loving, friendly, and not violent and mean.

  2. Amy,

Yup, I’ve heard that. My “icky” comment only referred to potentially perpetuating a falsehood regarding Jack. :)

The entire situation is completely understandable. We Laura aficionados are a devoted bunch, as are many owners of “pit bulls”. We want everything that anyone puts out there about Laura to be thoroughly researched and documented–we want the truth! :-) (On a side note, I’d recommend the new National Geographic series, “Dogtown”, which chronicles the rehab of the Michael Vick fighting dogs…)

During the time Laura wrote, the terms “pit bull”, “bulldog”, etc. were often used interchangeably. Nobody can really say what breed any of these dogs were–chances are, they were simply mongrels with bulldog-like attributes (short snout, strong jaw, stout & well-muscled bodies). I have a feeling that Jack was simply a good old-fashioned “mutt” who was tenacious and loving, as are many of the dogs we call pit bulls today.
